Faith Ringgold, the 91-year-old master of quilts, is having a moment. Her work was just featured at a major New Museum retrospective in New York, and will soon grace the galleries of San Francisco’s de Young Museum (opening July 16). Ringgold wasn’t always well known. For many years she flew under the radar, working as a teacher in New York’s public school system. A child of the 1930s Harlem Renaissance, her colorful, narrative works nod to the dynamics of that era. She depicts trumpeters, crooners, drummers, and other members of the Black community, and sometimes places them into historically “white” institutions. In Montauk, her relationship to jazz is the focus. Five of her signature “Story Quilts” are on view, as well as 20 drawings, paintings, sculptures, and prints. —Elena Clavarino
