“An opera house completely empty of life, its velvet seats and chandeliers waiting, its tiered balconies like ribs. It seems to hold its breath.” AIR editor Laura Jacobs is describing a work by Candida Höfer, the German artist known for her photographs of grand interiors—spaces dedicated to worship, entertainment, and study. The architects Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee have selected 10 of Höfer’s images, taken between 1993 and 2015, for an exhibition that shifts from her long-term focus on Europe to her more recent exploration of North America. The show moves geographically from West to East, and from newer to older images. —Jeanne Malle
