Maine’s Cranberry Island, only two miles long, is home to 40 full-time residents. The dreamy stillness of the area is palpable in the works of the American artist Emily Nelligan (1924–2018). Frequenting the island since the early days of her long career, Nelligan’s landscape drawings in charcoal evoke the quiet yet ethereal nature of her beloved coastal Maine. Although grayscale in composition, the shadowy depth of Nelligan’s work draws the viewer into Cranberry Island. Alexandre Gallery presents 25 of these drawings, all created before 1975 and many never shown publicly until now. —Lucy Horowitz
