Growing up, Eileen Harris Norton knew little about the art world. But in 1976, in her early 20s, she attended an exhibition on Black History Month, bought a linocut by the Los Angeles artist Ruth Waddy, and a passion was born. Seven years later, when she married Peter Norton, she began focusing on art by people of color. “When we started collecting, they were nobodies, they were these young artists,” she has said. “But we decided, these young Black artists are worthy.” In 2014, she founded Art + Practice, which offers Angelenos free admission to various museums and art programs. It’s now been 50 years since that first acquisition, and this new exhibition celebrates Harris Norton as an “art godmother.” It combines over 80 works that speak of her commitment to social justice and artistic inclusivity. —Maggie Turner
