“Understand that sexuality is as wide as the sea,” said the late Derek Jarman, who died of AIDS in 1994. “Understand that your morality is not law. Understand that we are you.” Ever the rebel, Jarman made history as an experimental filmmaker, artist, and gay activist. His multifaceted work traveled the interior landscape of the tortured artist and examined the complexities of gay love. For the 25th anniversary of his death, Jarman’s art is brought together in a multimedia retrospective. —E.C.
