Mainie Jellett & Evie Hone - The Art of Friendship

Mainie Jellet, Painting, 1938.

Merrion Square West Dublin 2, Ireland

In the early 20th century, two young Irish artists returned from Paris with a radical vision that would reshape modern art in Ireland. Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone, inspired by their studies under French avant-garde masters, brought home more than new techniques, they brought a challenge to the very definition of Irish art. Despite working in different mediums—Jellett focused on Cubist paintings and Hone on stained glass—the two opened joint exhibitions that challenged many preconceived notions about what art “should be” in Ireland. Their early work as a duo is what pushed them into finding their own unique styles. “The Art of Friendship” traces the evolution of their artistic bond and its enduring impact on modern art in Ireland. —Hannah Gross
