Derek Fordjour: Shelter

Jan 17 – Apr 19, 2020
3750 Washington Boulevard, St. Louis, MO 63108, United States

Amid the dirt floors and the corrugated-metal walls that serve as a shelter for this solo exhibition, Derek Fordjour’s sculptures and paintings meditate on race in the U.S. as well as on Fordjour’s Ghanaian lineage. The work and its ramshackle space suggest alienation from the American dream (itself a tattered form of shelter), a collective energy that Fordjour often expresses through images of American sports events. “Shelter,” the artist’s first major museum exhibition, questions the ideal of home in the context of migration, dislocation, and race. —C.J.F.
