Deborah Roberts: I Have Something To Tell You

Excuse Me While I Kiss the Sky, by Deborah Roberts.

July 9–23, 2022
25-28 Old Burlington St, Mayfair, London W1S 3AN, United Kingdom

In her continued exploration of otherness, Deborah Roberts has created the largest paintings of her career. The artist, based in Austin, looks at the challenges Black children face on their path to adulthood, and sometimes refers to prominent cases of racism, such as the plight of Child Q—a young girl in London who was strip searched when a school teacher accused her of smelling like marijuana. Roberts builds collages with images from the internet and literature, then paints in details to create what she calls “hybrid figures.” On canvases with black backgrounds, she varies the skin tone, sometimes tendering her figures hardly discernible, a means of drawing viewers closer. Roberts may also add white outlines around the bodies, an allusion to the chalk at crime scenes. —Clara Molot
