In the 1970s and 80s, Keith Haring lived in downtown Manhattan and ran with a pack that included Warhol, Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf. Together they were an aesthetic force field, their energy reaching from the School of Visual Arts to Club 57 and into the street. Just before he died in 1990 from HIV/AIDS-related causes, Haring established a foundation and placed within it his personal collection of art—works that were gifts, purchases, and trades with creative friends. Now these 140+ works will be auctioned at Sotheby’s, and the proceeds will benefit The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of New York. —E.C.
