Trained as a photographer, the Alabama-born artist Danielle Mckinney took up painting during two years spent in Pont-Aven, France, just before graduate school, and then committed to it full-time during the pandemic lockdown. At Marianne Boesky she presents 12 new oil paintings. Each work features a woman alone in a room, indulging in a moment of quiet. The viewer is immersed in spaces of velvety calm, interiors that hold women lost in thought. Mckinney’s figures are imagined—a confluence of photographs and memories. Soulful, still, they sometimes seem to be waiting out a storm. —Clara Molot
