Riccardo Muti closes the season with a free concert in Millennium Park. These occasions invariably draw crowds in the tens of thousands, and for good reason. This year, the maestro opens on a delicate note with the songful Andante Moderato of Florence Price, a long-neglected composer of the Black Chicago Renaissance who is enjoying a personal renaissance of her own. Then it’s on to Tchaikovsky’s mighty Symphony No. 5. Many of the composer’s contemporaries judged it harshly. Today it’s a fixture. The struggle for recognition knows no color barrier. —Matthew Gurewitsch
