In the 20th century, Condé Nast magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair, and creative directors like Alexander Liberman, helped develop the medium of photography. From Edward Steichen and Horst P. Horst to Lee Miller and Diane Arbus, the photographers who worked on assignment for the publishing company made waves across the globe. In this show, which occupies all floors of the museum, masterpieces from Condé Nast’s archives embody the decades from 1920 to the early 1980s. Works by Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, and many more create a narrative arc of the 20th century. Glamour, sex, race, and la mode emerge as perennial themes. —Elena Clavarino
