Four decades of fashion and couture’s biggest names! In 1986, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs inherited an enormous costume archive and began turning fashion into the stuff of blockbuster exhibitions. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the museum is bringing back 40 standout looks from past shows, among them the hugely popular retrospectives on Christian Dior and Elsa Schiaparelli as well as “La Mécanique des dessous,” an exhibition devoted to the surprisingly inventive history of underwear. There are sketches, runway photographs, and a look behind the scenes at how museums keep decades-old couture in pristine condition. —Elena Clavarino
