Born in Paris in 1953, Sophie Calle transforms investigations into her own life and the lives of others into art. For more than 50 years, she has followed strangers through the streets, read private correspondence, and photographed hotel rooms while their occupants were away, blurring the line between research and voyeurism. Presenting Calle’s first solo exhibition in Berlin in more than 20 years, the Hamburger Bahnhof is showing six bodies of work from the past three decades. On view is “The Detachment” (1996), a series of 12 photographs documenting sites in Berlin where symbols of East Germany were removed after reunification; the images are accompanied by recollections from passersby. Also on display is Les fantômes d’Orsay (2022), a large-scale installation inspired by the time Calle spent in an abandoned hotel inside Paris’s former Gare d’Orsay, which later became the Musée d’Orsay. —Elena Clavarino
