“Polychromy” is Greek for “many colors.” Scholars are now realizing that among the colorless sculptures that have survived thousands of years, some were once vividly painted and ornamented. The Met brings color back to the sculptures of Ancient Greece and Rome, revealing the lost history of polychromy and, with cutting-edge scientific methods, discerning the lost colors of many of its own holdings. The show includes colorful recreations and a fresh look at the meaning of color in antiquity. —Clara Molot
