Art in Resonance

Salisbury Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

The Peninsula Hong Kong opened in December 1928 and has been the city’s resident grande dame ever since. Seven years ago, the group launched a yearly contemporary art program commissioning ambitious work from emerging artists, timed each year to coincide with Hong Kong Arts Month. This year’s edition is characteristically varied: the local artist Angel Hui has wrapped the hotel’s awning and its fleet of Rolls-Royces in a large-scale installation; Albert Yonathan Setyawan, a Tokyo-based Indonesian artist, has installed a contemplative ceramic work in the Lobby; and Dr. William Lim, in collaboration with the carpet company Tai Ping, has transformed The Verandah Café into something approaching a dreamscape, drawing on Lim’s painting A Bright Future. The program is organized in partnership with the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. —Elena Clavarino
