Christina Quarles

Mar 13 – Aug 29, 2021
220 E Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60611, USA

The painter Christina Quarles is known for distorted figures that merge with domestic objects—a disturbing metamorphosis. Limbs, torsos and faces are pinned within vibrantly colored canvases, intersecting across various planes. Quarles is telling stories about the body, how the social realm and its stresses implode within to create alienation and disconnection. In her largest retrospective to date, a selection of work from the last three years is brought together, including a large-scale installation. —E.C.
