Vivian Suter paints in Panajachel, Guatemala, a small town on the northeastern shore of Lake Atitlán. Often described as a solitary woman, Suter works outside, mixing rainwater and earth with oil paints and acrylics. Her totemic swathes of vibrant paint often stand in for the lush and elemental Guatemalan lowlands. “Disco” is the name of her dog, who has been a witness and companion during her hours making art. In this monumental exhibition, 500 paintings, including 163 on view for the first time, fill the Lisbon gallery. “Nothing I have ever worked on as an artist would have any meaning without this place,” Suter says, “without these trees, without the leaves, without my dogs, who follow me wherever I go.” —Elena Clavarino
