Since the establishment of the Jin Dynasty in the 4th Century A.D., the Yangzi Delta’s fertile soil, seaports, and population density have made the region—called Jiangnam—the center of economic productivity in China. The region, which counts Shanghai and Nanjin among its numerous metropolitan areas, also has had a dominant role in the country’s cultural and artistic development. A new exhibition focuses on the artistic output of the delta from Neolithic times to the 18th century. Featuring 200 artifacts from the region, ranging from bamboo carvings to silk paintings, the collection spotlights the rich cultural heritage of one of the fastest growing regions in East Asia. —Paulina Prosnitz
