How have representations of the female figure evolved during the 20th and 21st centuries? John Currin’s women are retro and erotic, executed with rounding brushstrokes. Cindy Sherman wears a black dress and a scowl, and occupies the picture space with obtrusive power. Jeff Koons attaches a mirrored blue sphere to a painted copy of Rembrandt’s somber Lucretia—a blue eye, a pregnancy. This exhibition includes works by Richard Avedon, Georg Baselitz, Cecily Brown, Pablo Picasso, and many more. Real and virtual environments are created by India Mahdavi, the architect famous for her bold touch and vibrant palette. —E.C.
