Sterling Ruby: The Mountain

Sterling Ruby, DRFTRS (8828), 2025.

Promenade 79, 3780 Gstaad, Switzerland

Sterling Ruby was born in 1972 in Germany, on a military base in Bitburg. His father was American and his mother was Dutch. Soon after Sterling’s birth, the family moved to the U.S.—first to Maryland, then to a farm in rural Pennsylvania, where Ruby became familiar with Amish quilt-making and redware pottery. The two mediums guided him into garment-making, sculpture, and ceramics. Ruby is now one of the most fascinating artists in American. In this exhibition in Gstaad, new sculptures are on display. Inspired by Ruby’s time in the California Sierras, they address themes of growth, decay, and the grand patterns of nature. —Henry McGrath
