Bruce Cahn: Discovered

Mar 13 – Apr 11, 2021
747 NY-28, Kingston, NY 12401, United States

The little known Bronx-born artist Bruce Cahn (1942–2020) spent his life as an outsider, moving between his studio in Chelsea and his countryside cottage in Woodstock, New York. When he died last year, Cahn’s widow invited Alan Goolman, curator at the Lockwood Gallery, to visit her late husband’s studio. What he saw astonished him. No one in the area had heard of this man, yet the work was masterful. And prolific. Cahn’s wife explained that her husband moved tirelessly from one medium to the next, becoming expert in each. He produced sculpture, watercolors, oil paintings, photography, and vibrant self-portraits. In this long overdue exhibition, 50 works in a number of mediums are on display, and a spotlight has finally found an artist who preferred the shadows. —E.C.
