Well into the 20th century, women in the art world were still mostly overlooked, hidden in the shadows of men, humored when they weren’t hindered. By the midcentury, female artists had elbowed into the limelight. The Arts Council Collection looks to radically recalibrate the history of British sculpture by re-evaluating the influence of female sculptors during the last 75 years. The collection, which holds over 250 sculptures and installations by more than 150 women, is presenting works by approximately 50 of these artists. The show begins with the very first work by a sculptor that the museum acquired: Barbara Hepworth’s 1947 drawing Reconstruction, in which a surgeon at work looks much like a sculptor wielding hammer and chisel. —E.C.
