“This work demands this sense that you slow down,” Liza Lou said in 2017, speaking of signature medium, paintings that employ glass beads. “If you don’t know that it’s made of beads, it tricks the eye, you think the work is out of focus somehow. It’s because the eye can’t really recognize this type of labor. Your eye can’t take it in or remember. As you get way closer, it gets easier.” In this new exhibition, “Both Sides, Now”—a continuation of Lou’s cloud series—she hammers the glass beads off their threads, leaving an abstract and ethereal tracery of thread, bead, and paint.
