Dorothy Rice was always an artist. Born in 1924 in New York, she was invited to join the Art Students League at just 14. A detour occurred, however, when she was discovered by the Vogue photographer John Rawlings. In the 1940s, Rice was chosen to be the American face of Christian Dior’s “New Look,” and through the 50s she was in-demand in the fashion glossies. But life is long. Rice, who died in 2023, returned to art and worked in the mediums of painting, watercolor, sculpture, and silk screen. Her cityscapes are fresh, jaunty, and full of rhythm. Her landscapes are mysterious. And her colors delight. This exhibition surveys Rice’s work in all mediums. —Laura Jacobs
