The married duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude were larger than life. Their art was larger than life, too, or perhaps life at its largest. The couple wrapped city monuments in cloth. They turned the world’s most dramatic landscapes into installations. Twenty years ago, when they brought their vision to New York City, 7,503 saffron-colored “gates” went up in Central Park. The artwork, titled The Gates, resembled a river of saffron fabric snaking through the park, a flame of life flickering against the bare trees and gray February sky. This exhibition explores The Gates through photography, archival materials, and immersive installations, and then looks at other projects dreamt of but never realized. —Elena Clavarino
