After a 1976 apprenticeship with May Ray in Italy, Christopher Makos moved to New York, where he became a close friend of Andy Warhol. The Californian, who is now 77, photographed the biggest artists and rock stars of the time, from Salvador Dalí to Steven Tyler to Warhol himself, including a portrait series of the pop artist in drag. Makos also documented queer males, drag queens in Fire Island, “hustlers” in the West Village, and his own nude self. This Makos exhibition in Santa Fe presents 40 unflinching photographs from the 1970s and 80s. —Paulina Prosnitz
