Bluebeard: While Listening to a Tape Recording of Béla Bartók's Opera, Duke Bluebeard's Castle

Feb 12–15, 2020
Rosebery Ave, Clerkenwell, London EC1R 4TN, United Kingdom

The floor is covered with autumn leaves. The soundtrack is Béla Bartók’s expressionist opera, Bluebeard’s Castle. And the work is early Pina Bausch, circa 1977, absent from company repertory for almost 25 years and now being performed in the U.K. for the first time. Bausch’s vision of the relationship between men and women is super complicated—enmeshed, codependent, dangerously deep and deeply dangerous. Women are never more imperiled by their need to know, which goes all the way back to Eve in Eden, than they are when confronted by the closed doors in Bluebeard’s castle. A tale tailor-made for the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. —L.J.
