“An Attack Against One Is An Attack Against All,” proclaims a poster in the exhibition “Black Power to Black People: Branding the Black Panther Party.” Beneath that text, a drawing of a black panther—the big cat—pounces. Another poster features a black-and-white photograph of Angela Davis set against a bright red backdrop, the caption promoting an event at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Prominent during the 1960s civil rights movement, the Black Panther Party was an articulate voice for Black Nationalism but was also radical and therefore controversial. The vibrant graphics and bold slogans on display in this exhibition are emblematic of the group’s highly visual means of spreading its message. —Paulina Prosnitz
