In 1971, when Beverly Johnson was 19 and new to the modeling industry, she looked at her agent, the formidable Eileen Ford, and said, “I want to be on the cover of American Vogue.” Ford said it would never happen. Johnson found another agent. Three years later, there she was, the first Black model to be on the cover of American Vogue. This one-woman show, co-written with Josh Ravetch and based on Johnson’s 2015 memoir, sees her candidly recounting her career highs and lows as well as the difficulties of being one of the few Black models in a harsh and racist industry. It’s a 75-minute “live biography” that tells the story of a breakthrough beauty. As Johnson recently told Vogue, “My biggest lessons are in my huge mistakes.” —Jensen Davis
