In her 1982-83 collection, “Holes,” Rei Kawakubo configured the knitting machines to drop stitches, leaving random holes large and small in new sweaters. She called the result a species of lace. Technology has been deeply engaged with textile production since the invention of the Jacquard loom, and today these machines are computerized marvels. This exhibition at the Shepherd, a historic church that is now a gorgeous art center, explores the way a new breed of textile artists is using technology in their creations, or making references to it in their hand work. In “Warp and Weft” the ancestral meets the cutting edge. —Laura Jacobs
