William Walton’s Technicolor oratorio tells the Old Testament story of Belshazzar’s Feast—a sacrilegious banquet hosted by a Babylonian king (Rembrandt painted the same subject). Splashy and complex, the oratorio was instantly embraced upon its premiere in 1931. Rounding out the program: Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad. —L.J.
