Pride and Prejudice, the 20th Anniversary

Matthew Macfadyen and Keira Knightley as Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

Streaming on Theaters

Twenty years ago, Joe Wright adapted Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice for a new generation of viewers. And boy did they gobble it up. Starring the 20-year-old Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy, with a supporting cast that included Donald Sutherland, Judi Dench, Rosamund Pike, and Carey Mulligan, the film received four Academy Award Nominations (including Best Actress for the young Knightley) and offered a more elemental romantic landscape than the chamber-scale, six-part BBC series from 1995. Who can forget Darcy’s tortured hand flex, Dario Marianelli’s soaring score, or the excellent boiled potatoes? To celebrate the anniversary, Wright’s 2005 film is back in theaters for a limited engagement. —Paulina Prosnitz
