“Let this be a record, to keep and to build upon.” Such is the creators’ wish for Port(al), an immersive new choral and theatrical extravaganza that promises to open hidden doorways into the past, inviting bold-spirited adventurers “to navigate the eddies and flows of history, where the voices of forgotten lives echo through the ages.” The odyssey launches in the cavernous Agger Fish Building at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a patch of hallowed New York real estate you may be no more familiar with than we are. (For the record, it was established in 1801.) What to expect? Flip a coin! Heads, intimations of The Flying Dutchman? Tails, shivered timbers from Moby-Dick? Neither of the above? Both? Mostly, we’re longing to be carried away. Sturdy footwear advised: patrons requiring seating will be accommodated, but others will be mostly on the move, on decks that are uneven. —Matthew Gurewitsch
