Basquiat Soundtracks

Jean-Michel Basquiat, King Zulu, 1986.

Apr 6 – July 30, 2023
221 Av. Jean Jaurès, 75019 Paris, France

“Understanding the art of Jean-Michel,” wrote Robert Farris Thompson, “depends in part on understanding his lifelong involvement with music.” Before becoming an artist, Basquiat led a band named Gray and played onstage with new-wave groups such as DNA and The Lounge Lizards. Even while deep into his painting career, he was a regular at Manhattan’s nightclubs; his record collection numbered 3,000 and included the work of James Brown, Grace Jones, and Duke Ellington, as well as Africa Bambaattaa and Black Uhuru. Basquiat had a brief dalliance with Madonna in the early 1980s: he gave her paintings, then allegedly took them back when the two broke up, painting them over in black. This immersive exhibition combines 100 artworks with an original score by the Philharmonie de Paris. —Elena Clavarino
