Classical dance is dying. Classical dance is getting P.C. Classical dance is elitist. Classical dance is … well you get the picture. The truth? Classical dance can absorb whatever comes its way. But it does need new choreographers who know the classical vocabulary and embrace classicism’s values of clarity, mystery, and elevated energy. Enter BalletCollective, founded in 2010 by Troy Schumacher, a New York City Ballet soloist. The company’s recent hit, an experiment called The Woods, was described by Schumacher as “part indie rock concert, part concert dance, and part theatrical immersive experience.” BalletCollective’s fall season, titled “Echoes of the Unseen,” takes place in the majestic Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, up in Manhattan’s Morningside Heights, and includes world premieres by the choreographers Alysa Pires and Chloe Crenshaw, and a revival of Schumacher’s Natural History. The roster of dancers is small but mighty, and among the group is the glorious Miriam Miller, a principal at N.Y.C.B. who last season delivered the best Odette/Odile of the city’s many Swan Lakes. —Laura Jacobs
