In 1983, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin titled their album, the first they recorded after their split, Baby Alone in Babylone. The songs present Los Angeles as a modern-day Babylon, a place of opportunity and ephemeral happiness. With a nod to Babylone, the artist Ariana Papademetropoulos, a Los Angeles native herself, has created paintings inspired by her hometown and the Mesopotamian capital. They draw imagery from two renowned tapestry series that date to the Middle Ages: The Lady and the Unicorn at the Musée de Cluny and The Hunt of the Unicorn at the Cloisters, which depict, respectively, the human senses and the Passion of Christ.
