Orchestras everywhere are looking to grow their audiences, and a recent trend has seen them bringing film into the mix. The requirements? A great movie that has a great score. In its concert series “The Art of the Score,” the New York Philharmonic performs the soundtracks live as the movies screen. Past films have included Encanto and Jaws. Coming up in October, in honor of Halloween, the Philharmonic meets Alfred Hitchcock and his classic thriller Psycho (1960). The score was written by one of Hitchcock’s principal collaborators, Bernard Herrmann, and it was groundbreaking, using only a string orchestra to create a chilling atmosphere. The shrieking violins in the famous shower scene, sound slicing the air like a blade, revolutionized the use of music in horror. —Hannah Gross
