Antony Gormley: Time Horizon

Antony Gormley, Time Horizon, 2024.

Bircham Rd, King's Lynn PE31 6TY, United Kingdom

Houghton Hall was constructed in the 1720s for Sir Robert Walpole, who served as Britain’s first Prime Minister. The spectacular residence has since passed hands to the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, a direct descendent of Walpole. As of this spring, the Marquess has enlisted Antony Gormley to install 100 life-sized sculptures, cast from his own body, across 300 acres of the park. The iron figures are naked, eerie. A few stand tall, but most seem to be emerging from underground—or slowly sinking down into it. It’s one of Gormley’s largest installations to date. “My ambition for this show is that people should roam far and wide,” the artist explains. “‘Time Horizon’ is not a picture, it is a field and you are in it.” —Elena Clavarino
