It’s 1921. A reformed prostitute named Anna Christie enters a saloon. “Gimme a whiskey—ginger ale on the side,” she says. “And don’t be stingy, baby.” This is the opening line of Eugene O’Neill’s Anna Christie, written in 1920, debuted on Broadway the following year, and awarded the Pulitzer Prize the year after that. The play is now returning in a new Off Broadway production directed by Thomas Kail, who won a Tony Award for Hamilton in 2016. The cast alone is reason to book tickets. Michelle Williams takes the title role, and is supported by Tom Sturridge, Brian d’Arcy James, and Mare Winningham. —Jeanne Malle
