Anicka Yi: In Love With the World

Oct 12, 2021 – Jan 16, 2022
Bankside, London SE1 9TG, UK

The conceptual artist Anicka Yi, born in South Korea and raised in Southern California, has described artists as scientists who work “in reverse timelines.” Scientists start with a hypothesis and work to prove it, whereas artists make work to ultimately derive a hypothesis. Yi’s new installation in the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern envisions a new ecosystem. Guessing at the form artificial intelligence might take in the future, Yi has created floating machines called “aerobes,” their design inspired by marine life and mushrooms. Below the suspended sculptures, which look like octopi crossed with bacteria, scents that change weekly waft through the gallery. —J.D.
