Andy Warhol: Velvet Rage and Beauty

A view of the exhibition.

Potsdamer Straße 50, 10785 Berlin, Germany

The art of Andy Warhol has been the subject of countless exhibitions with wide-ranging themes. There’s his Catholic upbringing and its impact on his work. His fascination with fame. His relationships with other artists. His equation of art and business, art and the dollar. His love of repetition and series. This show at the Neue Nationalgalerie investigates a theme that ran from the late 1940s to the 1980s: Warhol’s interest in an ideal beauty, especially male beauty, and his attempts, apparent in many self-portraits, to move beyond his own flaws and fragilities into a realm of glamour. Think red lipstick, black eyeliner, wigs, velvet, the body, and the face. —Elena Clavarino
