Gearing up for the 250th anniversary of America’s independence, the American Contemporary Ballet presents a program of Americana à la George Balanchine. Stars and Stripes (1958) is set to orchestrations of marches by John Philip Sousa. Who Cares? (1970) uses the show tunes of George Gershwin. And Western Symphony (1954) dances to orchestrated cowboy melodies. The last ballet on the program, Union Jack, was choreographed for the American Bicentennial in 1976, and honors the British heritage of the United States. All four ballets employ exuberant lines, grids, and geometries, as if looking at American history through a kaleidoscope. A grand slam! —Laura Jacobs
