Alexander Girard: A Designer's Universe

Nov 23, 2019 – Mar 1, 2020
101 N Museum Dr, Palm Springs, 92262, United States

You’ve seen work by the 20th-century designer Alexander Girard, though you may not have put his name to it. A Pennsylvania Dutch version of Modernism; folk art rhythms clothed in Pop Art colors—that’s Girard. Unbelievably, this exhibition—organized by Vitra Design Museum—is the first major retrospective of his far-reaching work. Girard’s relationships with contemporaries Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Andy Warhol, and Rudi Gernreich are explored, along with his designs in textiles, furniture, sculpture, sketches, drawings, and collages never before exhibited. —L.J.
