Agnes Martin: The Distillation of Color

May 5 – June 26, 2021
540 W 25th St, New York, NY 10001, United States

What does beauty look like in abstract form? The Canadian-born American artist Agnes Martin once said, “I paint with my back to the world.” And for years, she painted the same thing: grids of carefully executed lines. The restricted yet spiritual quality of these works presented viewers with emotion as essence. Martin left New York City in the 1960s and took a sabbatical from the art scene, then re-emerged in the 70s with a developed vision. She replaced grids with glowing bands of color, and perfected these over subsequent decades. In this exhibition, Pace is focusing on work from the 1970s to the 90s. Martin’s meditative evolution and exquisite way with color are the focus. —E.C.
