Age is a Feeling won a Fringe First Award when it premiered in Edinburgh in 2022. Of Haley McGee, the actor and creator of the solo show, the Financial Times wrote, “She sits on a high umpire’s chair to see into her own future, with almost unbearably poignant results.” A dozen flowers on stems surround her, each labeled with one word—nouns like “oyster” and “book” and “plane.” The 12 stems represent the hours on a clock. Throughout her performance, McGee, who is now in her late 30s, asks the audience to choose six of the 12 words. Each becomes a different story, told from the perspective of an insightful 25-year-old who imagines the heartbreak, health issues, and regrets that can occur during a lifetime. “The further around the clock she goes, the more heartbreaking her encapsulation of the human lifespan becomes,” Mark Fisher wrote in The Guardian. After several runs in London, the show is now transferring to New York in a production directed by Mitchell Cushman. —Jeanne Malle
