Of the countless works of art and cultural objects stolen by the Nazis during the course of the Second World War, approximately one million artworks and 2.5 million books have so far been recovered. Seventy-five years on, this exhibition tracks the complex and intertwined stories of the people behind these pieces—the artists who made them, the families who owned them, and the looters who stole them. “Afterlives” brings together works by artists such as Chagall and Cézanne, the Jewish ceremonial objects known as Judaica, and commissions by four contemporary artists. —Sabina Vitale
