In 2016, the South African artist William Kentridge founded the Centre for the Less Good Idea, a space in Johannesburg where artists could collaborate. “Often, you start with a good idea,” Kentridge said at the time. “It might seem crystal clear at first, but when you take it off the proverbial drawing board, cracks and fissures emerge in its surface.” The center nurtures the revisions necessitated by those cracks and fissures, and new ideas gain strength through collaboration. Artists from the center have now come together to create African Exodus, a musical premiering at the Perelman Performing Arts Center. Blending African and Western choral traditions, the production explores themes of migration, displacement, and resilience. Eighty pairs of shoes make an appearance onstage, symbolizing the journeys of those who have left their homelands to look for a new beginning. —Elena Clavarino
