ABT Live from City Center: A Ratmansky Celebration

Mar 23 – Apr 18, 2021
70 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY 10023, USA

Tchaikovsky, Scarlatti, Glazunov, Bernstein. These are the four composers, with choreography by Alexei Ratmansky, that ABT has gathered together for its Ratmansky Celebration, presented live from New York’s City Center. The first three composers are represented by excerpts from larger works—The Sleeping Beauty, Seven Sonatas, The Seasons (fans are particularly keen to see Skylar Brandt as Aurora in Beauty’s “Rose Adagio”). The Bernstein is new. Titled Bernstein in a Bubble, it’s set to a late work by Lenny, his short, delightful Divertimento, which is full of coded meanings and allusions. Ratmansky has choreographed at least two works by Bernstein in the past: Dybbuk, a story of possession, which he made for Nina Ananiashvili in 2001, and Serenade after Plato’s Symposium, premiered by ABT in 2016. Back in 1980, Bernstein had wanted Jerome Robbins to choreograph Divertimento, but Robbins felt the pieces were too short, and would be hard to knit into a whole. “I actually like that the pieces are short,” Ratmansky tells AIR MAIL. “I fear the TV-screen audience is less patient than the theater audience, especially now, after a year of watching just the screen.” Ratmansky created the piece on ABT dancers in a quarantine bubble in Silver Bay, New York. It floats into City Center on March 23 and then out to everyone over the internet. —L.J.
