In A Lover’s Discourse (1977), Roland Barthes brings fragments of world literature about lovers into his own philosophical writing. The text reads like a stream of consciousness, and ranges from feelings of arousal and adoration to neglect and loss. Taking the book as a point of departure, the Aspen Art Museum has asked young artists to present a piece of work, and then pick pieces from the collection to pair alongside it. The results are moving. —Elena Clavarino
